The building instructions for these robots, representing five endangered animals---a sloth, gorilla, Komodo dragon, Polar Bear, and frog (a representative of thousands of endangered frogs)---are user-friendly, four-color, and thoroughly tested. Educational activities in math, literacy and critical thinking are included. All robots are built using the most common parts in the LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT Set (#9797) and the NXT Education Resource Set (#9648), and are easily modified for use with the NXT 1.0 or NXT 2.0 kits.

This book (and the companion "NXT One-Kit Creatures") are the best-looking third-party MindStorms books I've seen.

The images are full-color, and the paper is sufficiently shiny and white to give a sharp image free of muddy grays and blacks. Unlike most other MindStorms books, it's easy to see what goes where, without confusion. Some parts are shown in the "wrong" color to make them easily visible, and Ms Rhodes points out the discrepancies.

"Robots Alive!" is for teachers, so it's not surprising it includes student activities. I usually find such things irritatingly inane, but some of these are quite good, such as asking the kids to find Websites about endangered species they find /un/trustworthy, and explain why.

A few things could stand fixing. "Briefly" is rendered "Bri ly" in at least two places, and "pi" twice disappears on page 107. Nor does the Komodo dragon ("a ferocious carnivor-ee from the Lesser Sunda islands") have a way of biting people with germ-infected saliva. But all that's fixable.

Haven't gotten around to building any of the models. Perhaps things will be slow enough after the holidays to give them a shot.

Robots Alive! Endangered Species Lego Mindstorms NXT eBook Fay Rhodes Reviews

Kids on our robotics team just finished building the Sloth. It looks great and they can't wait to add the fur.
Minor problem with the instructions but the kids figured it out. Pages 73-74 have an extra piece on the head that 75 - 98 don't have. Not a big deal though.
When I looked at the sample posted for this book (from the store), the programming blocks were annotated directly above and below each block for clear reference. In the edition, each of the blocks has a number beneath it which corresponds to an annotation. Those annotations are simply listed in number order beginning below the diagram and can continue for a few pages beyond where the diagram is, so you cannot see visually which block the annotation refers to without having to backtrack to the diagram while trying to remember specific values needed for programming that block. I would consider 's sample quite misleading as an example of what the book contains. Had I known the format was so negatively altered, I would not have bought the edition. Also, the building instruction drawings are quite small in comparison to 's version. If wants you to be able to sample what you are buying, they should at least have it match what you are buying. Save yourself the trouble of the edition, if you want this book, buy the hard copy.
