I found the book totally absorbing and a MUST READ for anyone with a concealed carry permit. It takes you step by step with real life scenarios experienced by Craig from dealing with thugs, the police and the court system (criminal and civil.) I'm retired after 30 years in a suburban police department and I learned a lot from this book.
A very informative read. I thought I knew of what to expect from the Illinois justice system but this book informed me about a great many things that I was not aware of. Illinois is in all probability the most hostile state as pertaining to gun ownership and the right to self-defense. It was the last state to be forced to accept concealed carry law for qualified civilians so if you reside in a more gun friendly state it will inform you of what you can expect if you visit it. It will make you thankful that you live in a much more accommodating environment.
For any gun owner - new or experienced - this is a must read. The perspective of the vast majority of gun owners I have spoken to - having recently read the book myself - is completely out of step with the reality of the probable repercussions of using a firearm in your own defense, or the defense of loved ones. In fact, I have found that most law abiding gun owners are incredulous at the scenarios detailed. It hasn't deterred me from becoming a gun owner in defense of me and mine - it might for some - but this book is as powerful a weapon in its own right as any firearm I might have to hand. Before you pick that firearm up, read it!
I have absolutely no desire to use lethal force and would consciously do everything I could, to prevent and avoid its use to protect my family. As a new handgun owner, I actively seek resources and opinions on planning and actions my family and I can take to avoid and prevent using lethal force. This book should be REQUIRED reading for all new handgun owners who wish to understand the emotional, legal, financial and tactical aspects of lethal force. It is an unfortunate book, fortunately written, describing virtually every aspect of the consequences and ramifications of lethal force. The authors first hand accounts and experience provides a rich and powerful background, as they describe the voluntary and involuntary journey a gun owner might take if he uses lethal force. No amount of planning or pre-thought will cover every aspect a gun owner needs to consider prior to ever loading a bullet in a chamber, but this narrative addresses a wide spectrum of if-than-else scenarios.
The book is a tremendous resource, packed with real life post use outcomes that can become preventive enablers.
Informative and concise, the authors’ shares first-hand experience from negative interactions with law enforcement and prosecutors in the Windy City. Although Chicago may not reflect the attitude of every municipality toward those inclined to own and carry firearms, there are a growing number of cities in California, Oregon, etc., refusing the truth about constitutional ownership and concealed carry.
The book is not a tell-all of gun laws across the nation yet the basics of how to handle yourself in courteous, ethical, and professional interactions with law enforcement are enlightening and valid most everywhere. Also crisp, the authors provide a few links and resources for additional scholarly views and resources from leading industry advocates. Forced to Shoot will open your eyes to potential legal responses to carrying and utilizing a firearm.

This is an excellent guide to developing the rest and extremely important response to a deadly force situation. Hand gun and defense training is the beginning. I am sure I will read this again and use it as an instructional manual. Thanks, Craig!
