When Lucky Caldwell was 10, her mother, Red - the best-known hooker in Dundee, Idaho - married Morris Caldwell, a wealthy and much older man. It didn't last, of course, but Morris' kindness was the highlight of Lucky's life.

Mike Hill, Morris' grandson, doesn't feel too well disposed toward Red or her kids. He believes they alienated Morris from his family. Even Morris' Victorian mansion, on the property next to the Hill ranch, wasn't inherited by one of his grandchildren. Instead the house went to Lucky, who left it sitting empty for years.

Now that Red and Morris are both dead, Lucky has finally come back to Dundee. She plans to restore the derelict place - and to look for her real father, who has to be one of three men named in her mother's diary.

That means Mike has a new neighbor.

One he doesn't want to like....

This one made me cry a few times. Not really a tear-jerker at all, but something about this heroine and her story hit my soft-spot. She is that character who wants to be loved, to have a home and a place to belong to. Lucky left town when she was eighteen, pretty much stained by her mother's town-wh0re reputation, and so Lucky roamed around, trying to find her place but soon finds herself drawn back to Dundee, where she hopes to discover who among her mother's past lovers might be Lucky's unknown father. And let's just say that a lot of people hated her mother, a lot of bitterness and anger still in that town for various reasons, and now Lucky bears the brunt of some of that. Plus, any of the men who may be Lucky's father wouldn't dare want that secret to come out.

I really felt for Lucky, who is so misjudged and disrespected. I was so angry on her behalf at times; she's talked down to and just generally treated like trash because of who her mother was. Lucky is stubborn and has a tough exterior, but deep down she's still the little girl who wanted to fit in, who wanted to belong, and who wanted to be loved, most of all. And I loved seeing her find that love with Mike. These two have a lot against them, Mike's family having the most to hold against Lucky's mom, but when Mike sees Lucky again, now six years later, all grown-up and lovely, he feels instant attraction to her. Despite his family and despite the past, Mike begins to see deeper into Lucky, seeing a vulnerable and caring young woman.

I didn't realize this is book 4 in a series; I just wanted to read it mainly because of the older man/younger woman, which is one of my very favorite things to read in a romance. Mike is 39 and Lucky 24, and I love that age difference. It doesn't play as big an obstacle as Lucky family's reputation does, but Mike does feel the age difference, does keep coming back to that he is nearly 40 and that Lucky is too young for him. But the thing is, Lucky has loved Mike since she was sixteen years old. I thought there was so much sweetness there, I loved the passion between them, and I enjoyed how their relationship grew and deepened. Forty is not old to me, but I can see that Mike feels his age here when compared to Lucky's number and that fifteen years between them. I thought Mike was one fine older-man hero. Strong, caring, protective, standing up for Lucky.

There is one scene where he punches someone out over Lucky, and I was all over that scene. Finally, someone stands up for Lucky! Right after the punch-up, Mike says, "From now on, no one hurts Lucky or they answer to me." Man, that's almost as good as "Nobody puts Baby in the corner!" I loved seeing Mike like this, willing to fight for Lucky and expose his feelings for her, even knowing how his own family will react. Mike is single for a reason; he can love and leave 'em. He keeps it simple and wrinkle free, but now, here he is, all caught up in Lucky and the drama, and the scandal, and he would not have it any other way. Lucky has hooked him, and this man does not want to be free.

I really enjoyed this idea of falling in love despite the risk, despite the past. I actually wanted more of this couple in the epilogue, but I was happy with how they came together, very sweet and romantic on Mike's part. I loved that guy. My first read by Brenda Novak and I thought it was a great one.

A Home of Her Own (Audible Audio Edition) Brenda Novak Rachel Fulginiti Harlequin Audio Books Reviews

This book was a real tear jerker. I have no idea how Lucky put up with the cruel comments thrown her way, all because of the way her mother chose to live her life. Lucky was only a child at the time, yet everyone in the town treats her like dirt. Just because her mother was a tramp, a whore, and a gold digger, doesn't mean that she is one too. The men who had a sexual encounter with her mother needs to own up to their own actions. They talk bad about her mother, yet they are just as bad as she was. They had sex with her, and then they want to act like they they're all high and mighty? What???? As they say...'Let those who have committed no sins, throw the first stone'. If that was the case, no one in the town should even think about throwing anything.

I'm not too thrilled about the actions of Mike either. There was so many times when he could have defended Lucky when the towns people were calling her a tramp, but he stayed quite. Yes, he finally came around and started to defend her honor, but when it came to his family members, he hid away like a little child that had been scolded.

I loved the character of Lucky from start to finish. She wasn't about to compromise her integrity for anyone. She was strong willed, smart, and she loved Mike enough to let him go, rather than making his life any more complicated. She could have blown that whole town away with the information she had, but she chose to spare them all.

Would I recommend this book? YES!!!! Most definitely!
I've only recently started reading Brenda Novak's books, and while "When Lightning Strikes" didn't move me emotionally, I can't say the same about "A Home of Her Own."

While some readers might feel that Lucky Caldwell is unlikable to the extreme, I found it obvious that the hard-nosed, sometimes bitchy persona Lucky attempted to show the town of Dundee was nothing more than a cover up for hurt and sensitivity, brought about by her late mother's tawdry reputation, which was well-deserved. Lucky didn't deserve the town's hateful treatment.

It took a lot of emotional strength to keep me from crying when neighbor Mike Hill found Lucky curled up against the cold at the bottom of her sleeping bag, in an empty house with no working utilities, in a snow storm. My heart went out to her and from there on I was hooked. The love story which followed has been frustrating to say the least, given Mike's inner battle between loving Lucky Caldwell and staying true to his own family, who because of Mike's grandfather Morris's late-in-life marriage to Lucky's mother, Red, and the fact that Morris gave his house to Lucky rather than to Mike as orginally promised, hates and resents Lucky with a passion.

I haven't quite finished this book yet, but have barely been able to put it down, reading it in the middle of the night because I love it so much, and am waiting for the happy ending I hope comes soon. For once, I'm not thumbing through the pages to find the ending I'm looking for ahead of time!

And after I read this book to the end, I'm going to be eager to read "Stranger in Town," which continues the Dundee series.
Brenda Novak never disappoints. Her characters are likeable . . . even the ones who try to be unlikeable.

Lucky has been lonely all her life. Her mother, a woman of questionable character married an older man presumably for his money. Morris Caldwell is the only person who has ever been kind to Lucky. When he dies, he leaves his house to Lucky. Problems arise when Lucky moves in and begins to restore the Victorian house. Mr. Caldwell’s grandson lives in the house next door.

This was a sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking novel. I highly recommend it.
